Toros Stay Focused in Convincing 66-48 Win Over Coyotes

CARSON -- Needing to not look ahead to tomorrow's showdown against the California Collegiate Athletic Association leader, Cal State Dominguez Hills did just that behind a game-high 21 points from Monay Lee as the Toros handled the league's 4th-place team in CS San Bernardino in a 66-48 decision.

The Toros maintain their second-place standing with league-leading Humboldt State visiting Carson tomorrow night in a battle for first place.

"It was a good team win," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour, as a matter-of-fact.  "We were concerned about Alexcia Mack scoring and did a pretty good job on her (4 points on 1-of-9), and managed to limit their offensive rebound opportunities.

"We were balanced in our scoring with Monay having another nice game after looking to be assertive, and Breanne Garcia attacking well and hitting some good shots."

After the visitors scored the game's first five points, the Toros answered with six to take the lead, with Garcia scoring all six.

With CSUSB up 11-10 at the 14:35 mark, CSUDH went on an 8-0 run to take control, with a Jade Hudson bucket in the paint accounting for the last basket in the run before a pair of Tayler Champion free throws gave the Toros their first double-figure lead en route to a 34-24 halftime edge.

The Toros saw their lead shrink early in the second half, only to see Champion drain a triple to push CSUDH's lead to 47-33 at the 12:50 mark, reaching a high of 18 points six minutes later on a Lee layup.

With the game well in control, the final highlight of the night came as Kaaron King stole a ball at midcourt, went behind her back as a Coyote defender went by, and banked in her layup for a 19 point lead at 1:49 in the eventual 18-point win.

Lee connected for 7-of-14 shots and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line, with Garcia adding 13 and Talia Rayford 12.  Rayford also pulled down 10 boards to lead all players as CSUDH took a 37-to-28 rebounding edge in the win.

The Toros will continue CCAA hosting duties tomorrow night as league-leader Humboldt State visits Carson for a 5:30 pm first tip in what could be a preview of the CCAA and NCAA postseason.
