Rayford's Monster Game Pushes Toros to 78-73 Win Over SSU, Setting Program Record for Wins

CARSON -- With a shot at history on the line, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team nearly fell flat before Talia Rayford's game-high 25 points pushed the Toros to a thrilling come-from-behind 78-73 win over a game Sonoma State squad, a win that established the record for most wins in a single season.

The win also guarantees the Toros a first-round by in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament, set to begin on Thursday, March 5.

"We came out flat and SSU took advantage of it," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour.

"But I'm proud of the way we fought back with stops and baskets when we needed them.

"Talia put us on her back again, Monay Lee was solid and Breanne Garcia hit a huge three for us at the end, and we're thankful for the win."

After taking a 16-7 lead seven minutes into the game, CSUDH looked as if it would roll past the Seawolves, who entered tonight in second to last place in the league standings.

But SSU cut CSUDH's lead to just four late in the half, and then used its scrappy play and efficient offense to take a 69-59 lead with just 6:22 left in regulation, silencing the Toro crowd that looked to witness history.

But history was exactly what CSUDH made of SSU down the stretch behind Rayford, as the senior scored eight of her points down the stretch, giving the Toros the lead back with a pair of freebies at the 2:01 mark, before draining a triple to close the door on the Seawolf challenge in the eventual 5-point win.

Garcia added 17 and Lee 10 in the win, with Lee's 11 boards giving her the game's lone double-double.

CSUDH closes out the regular season tomorrow night against San Francisco State, honoring their five seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
