Toros Outlast Warriors To Open Twinbill Before CSUS Returns Favor in Nightcap

CARSON -- Senior starter Winston Lavendier and flame-thrower TyRay Gatewood provided the pitching while Kamran Young (pictured) provided the offense with a 3-for-5, 3 RBI performance as Cal State Dominguez Hills took an 8-5 win over visiting Cal State Stanislaus to open the four-game set.

CSUS followed with a 7-3 win in the nightcap to move CSUDH to 7-7, 2-4 CCAA.

The Toros got on the board early in the opener on a Juan Avena RBI double and double play ball that scored Avena from third in that same inning.

The visitors took the lead with three in the 3rd and added a run in the 4th before a Young RBI single and Jack Colick sacrifice fly knotted the game at 4-4.

A pair of extra base knocks by Kevin Lenik and Brady Conlan in the 5th pulled the Toros to a 6-4 advantage, and after CSUS got a run back via the long ball, Young added a pair of insurance runs with a 2 run RBI double to the gap for the game's final runs.

Lavendier earned the win after a gutty 7.0 innings of work, with Gatewood impressing after fanning the side in the 8th as part of 2.0 innings of work to earn his first save of the year.

The nightcap saw CSUDH score twice after the Warriors plated one in the 2nd, but that would be the extent of the Toro lead as CSUS scored thrice twice in the eventual 7-3 final, with Lenik tallying the lone multi-base knock outing for the hosts.

Fernando Gallegos was saddled with the loss, falling to 2-2 on the year.

The two teams play a single game on Saturday, with first pitch set for 11 am on Toro Field.
