Toros Back on Track After Huge 74-66 Win at Cal Poly Pomona

Team ties program record for most wins in a season at 22

POMONA -- Whatever, um, words of encourgement Cal State Dominguez Hills head coach Molly Goodenbour offered her team after last night's disappointing loss at UC San Diego seemed to work wonders as all five starters scored at least 10 points, with a sixth scoring nine, in handing Cal Poly Pomona a 74-66 defeat to sweep the regular season series from the perennial power Broncos, spoiling their "Homecoming" festivities.

Talia Rayford posted a double-double of 13 points and 12 boards in the win, adding five assists as CSUDH moved into sole possession of second place in the CCAA with two games left in the regular season.

Now at 22-6 overall, CSUDH also equals the program record for wins, set in the 1994-95 season.

"I'm very proud of our team being able to regroup and refocus, and forge a fantastic outcome," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour, with a smile almost noticeable.

"We challenged our players to work together to find their own solutions, to take ownership and to trust in one another and to enjoy the opportunity to play together, and they really embraced that.

"It was fun to watch them succeed."

The Toros stormed to a 35-21 first half lead behind 13 points from Breanne Garcia, while their defense held the potent Bronco offense to just six field goals and a shooting percentage of .273.

CSUDH's lead increased to 17 at 40-23 on a Monay Lee layup less than two minutes into the second half, and a game-high 23 at 52-30 on a pair of Anandi Jimenez foul shots at the 11:45 mark.

Three free throws by Ariel Marsh followed by another Bronco bucket following a Toro turnover brought CPP to within 12 points with 5:35 left, with a Marsh 3-pointer at 0:56 cutting the Toro lead to single digits.

But it was too little, too late as the Toros drained nine of their final 12 free throws down the stretch in the 8-point win, and give CSUDH a sweep of the regular season series for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Garcia finished with 16 points and seven boards, with Jimenez tallying 15 points and nine boards.  Lee finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds, while Tayler Champion added 10 points and Kielyn Wilson nine in the balanced win.

The Toros made their mark both at the free throw line with 29 makes in 40 attempts, as well as on defense with 11 steals compared to just four for CPP.

CSUDH also held last year's CCAA Player of the Year Jada Blackwell to just 11 points in 26 minutes after Blackwell went for 32 in the first meeting on January 16, a 73-69 win for the Toros.

The Toros end the regular season at home next weekend, starting with Sonoma State on Friday, February 27.
