Slow Start Dooms Toros in 68-60 Loss at UC San Diego

LA JOLLA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills shot just 28.6% from the field in the first half en route to a 33-25 halftime deficit at host UC San Diego, and the Tritons rode that momentum to a huge 68-60 win over the Toros to knock them out of first place atop the CCAA.

Breanne Garcia led the Toros with 17 points, with Tayler Champion (pictured) earning three fives in points, rebounds and steals as the Toros stay at 21 wins, moving to 16-3 in league play.

"UCSD played with greater poise and purpose than we did, and we never got into a rhythm," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour, on the Tritons sweeping the regular season series.

"On a positive note, I thought Jenee Gooden stepped in and played well and Kielyn Wilson gave us some spark and energy.  We need to regroup because it doesn't get any easier tomorrow night against Pomona."

The 3-point arc failed the Toros from the beginning as UCSD converted on three more attempts to aid in its 7-point halftime lead.

The Tritons pushed their lead to as much as 16 points at 44-28 with seven mintues elapsed in the second half, until Garcia and Gooden brought the Toros to within 12.

A Gooden layup to make it 51-43 at the 8:55 mark put a scare into the Tritons, but UCSD quickly recovered with a triple to push its lead back to double figures.

The Toros got to as close as six pionts on a Talia Rayford free throw with 3:52 left in regulation, but solid free throw shooting down the stretch held the Toros off, snapping CSUDH's season-high eight-game win streak.

CSUDH shot a subpar 68.2% from the foul line, missing seven of its 22 attempts, and was out-rebounded by six.

The Toros now find themselves in a two-way tie for second place with Cal Poly Pomona, whom they face tomorrow night in the Inland Empire at 5:30 pm.
