Toros Pick Up First Win of Year at Desert Stinger Classic

LAS VEGAS, Nv. -- After a frustrating start to its 2015 season, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team hammered its way to its first win of the year in a 10-3 win over New Mexico Highlands after dropping today's opening game to Central Washington, 8-3.

True freshman Alyssa Valinches earned the first win of her collegiate career while both Alexandra Mootry (pictured) and Carly Mitchell went 3-4 with two runs scored, and Stephanie Hua went deep.

The Toros move to 1-5 on the year.

CSUDH got on the board first in the nightcap as a Hua sacrifice fly and Mitchell RBI single gave starter Valinches a 2-0 lead.

After NMH cut the deficit in half, Hua launched a 2-run shot to double the Toros' score, adding another run in the 5th, two in the 6th on a pair of errors, and three in the 7th, all unearned.

Hua drove in three as part of a 9-hit attack while Valinches fanned 10 batters.

The opener was a pitching duel until the 7th, when the Cougars exploded for seven runs.

A Mootry shot in the 7th put the first runs of the day up for the Toros but it was too little, too late in the loss.

CSUDH concludes the tournament tomorrow morning, with an 11:30 am start against host Montana State-Billings.
