No. 20 Cal Baptist Takes Middle Game in 5-4 Final

CARSON -- Visiting and 20th-ranked Cal Baptist scored single runs in the 4th, 7th and 8th innings, and survived Cal State Dominguez Hills would-be rallies in the final three innings to take a 5-4 decision in the middle game of the three-game set.  Fernando Gallegos and Juan Avena each roped three hits while Joshua Flores belted his second home run of the year in the loss.

The Toros dip to 5-2 overall, with the rubber game set for tomorrow in Riverside, at 12 noon.

The Toros managed to strike first for the second game in a row, scoring in the bottom of the second inning on a Lancer fielding error, only to have CBU take the lead in the 3rd, and increase it to 3-1 in the 4th.

Joshua Flores brought the Toros to within one with a solo blast, with Fernando Gallegos knotting the game with a sharp single to right one inning later.

After CBU took the lead by answering with a solo home run, Avena evened it up with a single through the right side to plate Brady Conlan, until an RBI single off reliever TyRay Gatewood drove home what proved to be the game-winner.

Kevin Lenik and Brandon Polizzi both went 2-for-5, with Polizzi increasing his hit streak to seven.

The two teams conclude the series tomorrow at 12 noon, in Riverside.
