Team Effort Leads Toros to 2-1 Win Over No. 20 CBU

RIVERSIDE -- Senior catcher Danny Matienzo cut down a runner trying to steal base with two out and Cal State Dominguez Hills clinging to a 2-1 lead, preserving the win for senior Winston Lavendier with Kevin Brown earning the save, and Brady Conlan (pictured) tallying both runs batted in that included his second home run of the game that proved to be the game winner Thursday night at James W. Totman Stadium.

CSUDH improves to 5-1 on the year, as it prepares to host CBU Friday at 1 p.m. in Carson. The Lancers look to move above .500, currently boasting a 2-2 record.

Cal State Dominguez Hills was gifted with a great start from left-hander Lavendier, who threw 8 2/3 innings. The Toros scored first in the fifth and again in the seventh when Brady Conlan hit a one-out homer on a line.

CBU started its comeback attempt in the eighth as a lead-off double was cashed in on a sacrifice fly to cut CSUDH's lead in half.

The Lancers created more trouble for the Toros in the bottom of the ninth, as a two-out single chased Lavendier out of the game. A pinch runner was brought in for CBU, but was cut down attempting to steal second by Matienzo to end the contest.

True freshman Brandon Polizzi kept his hitting streak to begin the season alive with a pair of knocks, with Juan Avena also tallying a pair of hits in the win.

Kevin Brown was the beneficiary of Matienzo's rifle arm, earning his second save of the year without an official batter faced.

The two teams will battle tomorrow in Carson, with first pitch set for 1:00 pm on Toro Field.
