Free Throws Help Toros Escape Cal Poly Pomona with Win

POMONA -- Despite losing a 12-point halftime lead by the end of the third quarter, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team collected 25 of its 42 points in the second half on the free throw line to escape Kellogg Arena with a 73-66 win over Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Saturday night.

The Toros (4-6, 2-0 CCAA), who entered the game shooting 64.4 percent on the season from the free throw line, finished tonight's contest with a season-high 34-for-39 on the free throw line. Anandi Jimenez went 10-of-11 on the line and added a bucket for a 12-point evening. She also had 10 rebounds to complete a double-double.

Both teams had a cold-shooting night from the field. The Toros shot 33.3 percent (18-54) while the host Broncos (3-5, 1-1 CCAA) finished with 34.4 (21-61).

Breanne Garcia led all Toros with 16 points and had seven rebounds, Ali Bettencourt contributed with a dozen points and Monay Lee added 10.

Cal Poly Pomona's leading scorer, Jordyn Shane, finished the day with 16 points, just above her average. Mary Williams followed with 14 points and 11 boards for a double-double.

It was all CSUDH at the start of the first half. The Toros built a 15-2 lead within the first 7:30 and stayed up front throughout the first two quarters.

The Toros would go on an 11-1 momentum halfway through the second period to build the largest lead (17) in the half.

CSUDH went into the break up front 31-19 with all but one Toro tallying a point. The Toros shot 35.7 percent despite shooting a cold 2-for-11 from beyond the arc. Julia Poecksteiner produced seven points off the bench to lead all Toros with Garcia finishing the half with six.

Cal Poly Pomona had a horrendous first half, going 5-for-30 from the field for a 16.7 percentile.

The 12-point lead completely disappeared by the end of the third quarter with the Broncos outscoring the Toros 27-14. CSUDH did not hit a field goal and got all their 14 points on the free throw line. In fact, the Toros went perfect on the charity stripe during the quarter. Cal Poly Pomona, meanwhile, went 10-for-18 on the court including four 3-point baskets.

An 11-4 CSUDH run in the span of 3:41 early the fourth quarter enabled the Toros to retake the lead, and they never looked back.

While CSUDH begins a four-game homestand against Cal State San Bernardino on Dec. 19, it is the game before entering Christmas break. Including the contest with CCAA newbie Cal State San Marcos on New Years Eve, the Toros will play only two games the rest of the 2015 year.
