Toros Hold Off Late Charge in 63-58 Win Over San Marcos

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team got a scare from NCAA Division II/California Collegiate Athletic Association newcomer Cal State San Marcos, but 15 points each by senior leaders Monay Lee and Breanne Garcia offset a game-high 22 from Cougar Savannah Camp as the two-time defending conference champions Toros escaped with a 63-58 win over CSUSM in the final game of the 2015 calendar year.

The Toros (6-6, 4-0 CCAA), winners of three straight, improve their overall record to .500 for the first time this season.

Garcia, who played all 40 minutes for the third time this season, also added six assists to her name while Lee was a rebound short from completing her second double-double of the season. Imari Brown had contributed to a dozen points while Kielyn Wilson led both benches with 11 rebounds.

The Cougars (3-5, 2-3 CCAA), though, compiled a 41.3 shooting percentage while holding the Toros to 38.3. CSUSM also dropped seven baskets from the 3-point line.

CSUDH took a 32-24 lead at halftime. Garcia, Brown and Anandi Jimenez combined for 19 points within the first two quarters to help keep the Toros up front. Camp finished with nine points with Ashley Ontiveros right behind her with eight.

Although the Toros built a game-high 11-point lead in the third quarter, the Cougars erased it completely with an 10-3 run in the fourth. Despite clearing out the deficit, the Cougars had never taken the lead. The Toros did out score the Cougars 11-6 within the final five minutes of the game. Lee scored four points, Wilson had a bucket and Garcia earned the remaining five points from the free thow line.

The Toros will open the year 2016 at the Torodome Saturday when they welcome Chico State for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

Post-Game Note: The Toros improve to 4-2 when playing on New Year's Eve.
