Brown's 19 Paces Toros in 83-74 Win Over Chico State

CARSON -- Junior Imari Brown showed the leadership befitting an upperclasswoman as she led Cal State Dominguez Hills to an 83-74 win over visiting Chico State in the first game of the 2016 calendar year, keeping the Toros perfect in CCAA play at 5-0.

Here's Brown after the win.

The Toros, winners of four straight, also improve to 7-6 overall.

Brown, who joined the Toros this past off-season from Miami Dade College, scored a career-high 19 points off the bench. Despite feeling under the weather, senior Breanne Garcia collected 16 points and five rebounds and assists each. She also went perfect on all seven trips to the free throw line. Monay Lee dropped in 14 points but for the second consecutive game she came up a rebound short from a double-double.

Femi Hamilton and Anandi Jimenez each had a dozen points to round out the Toros in double figures.

The Toros combined for 43.1 percent from the field but gathered 23 points from the free throw line.

Brooke Bowen and Irie Stokes combined for 31 points to lead the effort for the Wildcats (5-6, 1-5 CCAA). After shooting a cold 26.5 percent in the first half, Chico State did bounce back in the second and finished the night 37.1 percent.

The Toros wasted no time jumping up front on the 'Cats and ended up finishing the first quarter leading 24-10. Lee dropped nine points during the opening period.

Chico State, however, returned the favor in the second by outscoring the Toros 18-13.

CSUDH did held on to take a 37-28 lead at halftime. The Toros did outshoot the Wildcats 42.9 percent to 27.3.

The Toros finish their season-high four-game home stand Thursday against Cal State Monterey Bay. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
