Garcia, Toros Halt UC Santa Barbara's Rally in Exhibition Win

SANTA BARBARA -- It may not go in the record book, but the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team got a confidence booster after holding off a NCAA Division I UC Santa Barbara fourth-quarter rally to claim a 70-67 exhibition win Sunday afternoon.
 
Breanne Garcia had an outstanding afternoon, going 10-for-16 with a perfect 2-for-2 in both the 3-point and free throw lines for 24 points to lead both teams. Monay Lee contributed with 16 points and Imari Brown finished with 13 along with a team-leading seven rebounds.
 
Kali Jones led the effort for UC Santa Barbara with 22 points. Onome Jemerigbe dished out nine assists to go along with her six points.
 
The Gauchos, who also used this contest as a final tune-up before their season opener, had trouble taking care of the basketball after conceding 22 turnovers. The Toros scored 18 points off those errors.
 
The Toros had 11 turnovers on the day.
 
Trailing 37-36 at the half, the CSUDH came up big in the third quarter, outscoring UCSB 20-12. The Toros built their largest lead by 10 with 8:46 remaining in regulation. A Jones layup with less than 10 seconds remaining brought the Gauchos to within one, but Monay Lee made a pair of free throws to give the Toros a 3-point lead.
 
Mi'chael Wright tried to go for the game tying 3-point shot but came up short at the buzzer.
 
CSUDH will visit fellow conference member Cal Poly Pomona for the CCAA/PacWest Challenge. The Toros will take on Point Loma Friday at 7 p.m. followed by Azusa Pacific Saturday at 6 p.m.
