Sea Lions Stun Toros at End of Regulation en Route to 84-78 OT Win

POMONA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills enjoyed a 3-point lead with two ticks left in regulation, but fouled a 3-point Point Loma attempt to give the Sea Lions a chance to tie, and tie they did with three free throw makes to send the game into overtime en route to a heartbreaking 84-78 loss for the Toros.

Breanne Garcia led all scorers with 30 points, including five 3-point baskets, in the loss. Kielyn Wilson completed a double-double after logging in 13 points and dominating in rebounds with 19 total, including nine offensive boards. Ali Bettencourt contributed to 18 points in her official Toro debut and Imari Brown scored all 11 of CSUDH's bench points.

The Toros (1-3) shot 40.3 percent from the field and edged the Sea Lions (0-1) in rebounds, 43-40.

Point Loma, in its season opener, saw three players collect more than 20 points in the game, despite having only used two players off the bench. Roya Rustamzada shot 50 percent (10-for-20) from the field and added seven free throws for a team-most 28 points. Madison garnered 22 points and Syndey Tonack added 20 points. Alex Brunk also had a double-double with a dozen points and 13 boards.

The Sea Lions shot 46 percent around the perimeter but earned 18 points from the charity line.

Both teams went back-and-forth in dominance in each quarter. Trailing 25-18 after one period, the Toros responded by scoring 17 in the second to tie the game, 35-35, at halftime. CSUDH trailed by as many as 10 with 7:46 remaining in regulation until momentum set up a Toro rally. A 3-pointer by Garcia put the Toros in front, 70-68, and increased the lead by four.

Garcia, however, conceded a foul with five seconds remaining that set up three successful free throws by Brunk to tie the game at 74 apiece. It was all Point Loma during the overtime period as it took the lead and kept the Toros in the rearview mirror for the win.

The CCAA/PacWest Challenge continues Saturday as the Toros take on Azusa Pacific at 4 p.m.
