Toros Return 5-Set Favor in Marathon Win Over Jacks

CARSON -- It was deja vu all over again, but this time it wasn't as Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 3-2 win over visiting Humboldt State, returning the favor after the Jacks took a 3-2 win in Arcata 15 days ago.

Cathryn Lopez served six aces to lead CSUDH to a decisive 13-3 edge in that category while Bridget Heins hammered down a team-high 15 kills as the Toros snapped a four-match skid in the process that moved the hosts to 8-16, 6-10 CCAA, and keeps them mathematically alive in the race for the eighth and final spot in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament.

Here's Heins on the team effort that got CSUDH over the hump tonight.

The Toros hit .314 in a first set that saw Heins go for six kills and Alijah Gunsaulus five, and Dana Brown begin the game with three strong serves to stake the hosts to a 3-0 lead, with Lopez pushing the edge to 8-2 with strong serving of her own.

The Jacks got as close as four points midway through the frame, but a Breanna Golsch service ace gave the Toros set point at 24-14, and a Heins blast put the first set in the books three points later.

CSUDH looked to take a two-sets-to-none lead after taking a 17-14 lead in the second frame, only to have the Jacks use a 4-1 burst to knot the frame at 18-18 on a Katherina Rifilato kill before outscoring the Toros 7-3 down the stretch to even the match.

After intermission, the Toros regrouped to take a commanding 10-3 lead on tough serving by Lopez and Claire Autry, and led from start to finish in the convincing 25-14 win.

The Jacks stormed back in the fourth to turn a 17-14 deficit into a 25-19 win to set up a decisive fifth set, bringing back memories of that October 22 match in which HSU reversed a two-sets-to-one deficit to win in five.

Unlike that fifth set that saw HSU score the first six points, CSUDH rolled to a 3-0 lead behind Vanessa Phyakeo's serve, and kept that three-point edge as the teams switched sides.

With HSU threatening to stage another come-from-behind stunner after getting to within 8-7, a Gunsaulus blast gave CSUDH breathing room at 9-7, and after the Jacks replied with a kill from match-leader Symone Hayden, who finished with 23, a Heins kill allowed Lopez to serve, and the freshman went to work with three straight points to bring CSUDH to a 12-9 lead.

A Jack kill and Toro attack error again gave HSU hope at 12-11, but kills by Heins and Autry gave CSUDH match point, and an attack error by the Jacks sealed the Cardinal and Gold win to even the season series at one each.

Castro added 13 kills, Autry 12 and Gunsaulus 11 to round out four Toros in double-figure kills, while Castro's eight blocks gave the Toros an 11-7 edge at the net.

Brown dished 48 sets to increase her CSUDH career record, while Lopez's 18 digs brought her total to 432, good for third on the CSUDH all-time single season digs list, needing six to move into second place and 34 for first place.

The Toros head to Seaside for a Tuesday tilt at CS Monterey Bay, before finishing the regular season next weekend hosting UC San Diego and CS San Bernardino.
