Balance Key in 4-Set Win at Monterey Bay

SEASIDE -- Sophomore Claire Autry was one of three Cal State Dominguez Hills players to share match-high honors with 10 kills as the Toros swept the regular season series from Cal State Monterey Bay with a 4-set win tonight in the Kelp Bed.

With the win, CSUDH improves to 9-17, 7-11 CCAA and remains mathematically alive for one of eighth berths in the upcoming CCAA postseason tournament, with just two matches left in the regular season.

The Toros played a near flawless first set, hammering down 10 kills against just two errors in a convincing 25-10 win, holding the hosts to a -.074 hitting clip while connecting on .348 of their own attempts.

Monterey Bay played the second set closer, but strong serving by Breanna Golsch and Dana Brown proved the difference as CSUDH came back from an early deficit to lead by six points late en route to a 25-21 win, with Bridget Heins putting the finishing touch on the set after an Otter service error gave the Toros set point.

The Otters regrouped to take set three after the break despite being out hit by the Toros, .226 to .167, only to have CSUDH storm back in the fourth to take the match and the season series.

In the fourth, Vanessa Phyakeo's strong serve staked the Toros to a 6-0 lead, with a pair of Golsch aces bringing CSUDH to 14-5 midway through the set.

A Morelia Castro blast all but the put the set away at 22-8, with one final Otter attack error closing the set at 25-12, and the match at 3-1.

CSUDH won every statistical category tonight that included a +4 in aces and +3 in blocks, with Autry's four aces and Castro's seven blocks pacing the Toros in those categories.

The Toros return home for the final weekend of the regular season, hosting powers UC San Diego and No. 21 Cal State San Bernardino, with the match against the Coyotes following a senior ceremony for Brown and Alijah Gunsaulus.
