Late Surge Pushes Alaska Fairbanks Past Toros in Seawolf Jamboree Opener

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Up 71-70 after an Ivan Dooley triple hit nothing but net against Alaska Fairbanks with 3:43 left in regulation, the Nanooks went on an 11-2 run over the game's final minutes while hitting a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe to take an 81-73 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in game one of the Seawolf Jamboree, hosted by Alaska Anchorage.

Dooley led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor, also pulling down six boards as CSUDH dips to 1-2 on the year.

The Toros hit 43.1% of their shots from the floor, but misfired on 11 of 24 attempts from the foul shot, including 10 misses in 15 attempts after the break after hitting a near-perfect 8-of-9 in the first half.

Alaska Fairbanks used a pair fo double-figure rebounders to take a 44-38 edge on the glass, making up for a 5-for-23 night from behind the arc compared to 10-of-27 for the Toros, which kept the Cardinal and Gold in the game.

The Toros held as much as a 9-point lead in the first half after the second and final triple by newcomer Vincent Golson pushed CSUDH to a 28-19 edge with 7:54 left in the first half.  The Nanooks, however, took the lead four minutes later, enjoying a 42-37 lead as the first half buzzer sounded.

UAF kept the Toros at a distance after the break, taking its first double-figure lead at 62-52 with 9:31 left in the game.

Bolstered by consecutive 3-pointers by Jonathan Nichols, a Dooley jumper and a made freebie, CSUDH got to within one point before taking the lead on a Golson bucket on a fast break at the 6:28 mark.

The two teams tied three more times down the stretch, the final time at 71-71 with 3:22 left, but two-consecutive turnovers led to four-straight points by UAF, and after a pair of missed baskets by the Toros that followed another CSUDH turnover, the Nanooks kept their cool at the line with four straight makes with 37 seconds left en route to the 81-73 final.

UAF dominated in the paint while posting a +10 in points off turnovers in remaining perfect at 3-0 to begin the new year.

The Toros will face host Alaska Anchorage tomorrow at 4:00 pm, with the game being streamed live on the Seawolf website.
