Lopez Sets Dig Record as Toros Earn Marathon Win Over UCSD

CARSON -- Freshman Cathryn Lopez made history tonight as she established the Cal State Dominguez Hills single season record for digs to help lead the Toros to a thrilling 5-set win over visiting UC San Diego tonight to kick off the final homestand of the 2015 regular season.

CSUDH, which finished off the Tritons after an epic match point which can be seen by clicking the play button above and features a ridiculous one-handed dig by Lopez at the :26 mark, now has won three-straight in improving to 10-17, 8-11 CCAA.

Check out Lopez's post-match interview here.

The Toros hit .207 compared to just .161 for the Tritons, who saw their eight-match win streak snapped.

After the visitors took an early 2-1 lead, the Toros used a 14-5 run to take control of the set, fueled by Vanessa Phyakeo's strong serve.

The Tritons crept to within four on a Toro serving error at 16-12, but CSUDH closed the set on a 9-4 run to take the opening stanza.

UC San Diego earned the wins in the next two sets by posting 29 kills compard to 27 for the Toros, before the Toros answered with a come-from-behind win in set four to even the match at two sets each.

Trailing 7-3, the Toros rode five Claire Autry serves to take an 8-7 lead, before the two teams found themselves tied again at 14.

That's when Phyakeo again starred at the service line with four straight points to give the Cardinal and Gold momentum.

Kills by Alijah Gunsaulus late and one by Cecelia Lucas at 23-19 gave the Toros set point, and Lopez finished off the set with a service ace to force a fifth.

Using that momentum, the Toros edged to a 7-4 lead before UCSD made it interesting by tying the frame at 7, with the teams splitting the next 14 points to find themselves at a stalemate at 14-14.

After the teams exchanged kills, Bridget Heins hammered the final two of her match-high 18 kills to seal the win, sending the Toros to their third-straight win.

Gunsaulus and Autry added 15 kills each in the win, with Lucas chipping in 10, four block assists and a solo stuff to push her past the century mark in blocks.

CSUDH shined at the net to the tune of a 13 to 6 block advantage, also serving up six aces compared to just one for the guests, hammering home nine more kills in the win.

Six Toros also went for double-figure dig totals led by Phyakeo with 18, while Lopez added 17 to give her 467 digs this year, with one match left in the regular season.

CSUDH will look to win four-straight league matches for the first time in program history, but will have to go through No. 21 Cal State San Bernardino to do so after the Coyotes took their own 5-set marathon win earlier tonight at Cal State LA.

Prior to the 7:30 pm match, the Toros will honor their two seniors in Brown and Gunsaulus, which you can watch live on CollegeTVTicket, starting at approximately 7:15 pm.
