Big Third Quarter at Torodome Gives Toros First Win of the Season

CARSON – There's an old saying that goes, "Home, Sweet Home," and that's exactly how Cal State Dominguez Hill's women's basketball team felt after the Toros opened their home season at the Torodome with a 68-63 win over William Jewell Sunday afternoon.

After starting CCA Division II Tipoff Classic 0-2 at the Anaheim Convention Center, the Toros picked up the first victory of the season on their own floor.

"It felt great to be back (home)," senior Breanne Garcia said. "Since we lost to two tough teams (Alaska Anchorage and Winona State), this was a must win for us."

The senior guard went into the locker room with four points, but tallied 16 in the latter period to finish the day with 20.

Femi Hamilton kept the Toros close with a 10 of her 12 total points coming from the first two quarters. She also had seven of her points from the free throw line.

Monay Lee rounded out CSUDH in double figures with 11 points and added eight rebounds. Kielyn Wilson also led the Toros in the rebounding column with eight.

The Toros went into the break trailing 32-28, but Garcia said there were no changes made going into the second half. CSUDH outscored William Jewell 22-10 in the third quarter with Garcia tallying 11 points, including hitting three from beyond the arc.

"We didn't execute the game plan in the first half," she said. "In the second half we were passing the ball, driving it in and dishing it out a lot more and it got us in a rhythm from then on."

It was just enough to edge a 3-point shooting Cardinal team (1-2) that went 11-for-19, something the Toros knew going into the game, according to Garcia. Five different William Jewell players made at least two 3-point baskets. Blair Klosterman finished the day with 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double to lead the Cardinals.

CSUDH built its largest lead in the opening half when Kielyn Wilson's layup put the Toros ahead, 14-9, at the 8:42 mark in the second quarter. But the lead disappeared after the Cardinals ignited a 12-4 run, to take a 28-18 lead with 4:30 remaining.

Hamilton did get the Toros back within four (32-28) at the half by making 5-of-6 free throws within the final three minutes.

CSUDH will go off the record a week from today taking on NCAA Division I UC Santa Barbara. Tipoff is to be determined.

The Toros may have had the rare early start to the 2015-16 season, but it never bothered them. In fact, it proved exciting.

"I know all of us seniors are glad to be back. We're going to keep working hard and hopefully get better from here on," Garcia said.
