Autry's 15 Kills Leads Toros Past Cougars in CCAA Clash

CARSON -- Sophomore Claire Autry's 15 kills led three Cal State Dominguez Hills players with double-figure putaways as the Toros held off a hard-charging Cal State San Marcos squad en route to a 3-1 win.  The victory moves CSUDH to 6-12, 4-6 CCAA, and is the third win in the last four matches for the Cardinal and Gold.

The Toros hit .219 on the night, the second highest percentage on the year following CSUDH's 3-0 sweep of Cal Poly Pomona where they hit .239 in the win.

CSUDH jumped out to an 8-5 lead on a Cougar service error, turning that edge into a 19-11 lead on the strong serve of Rylee Kiger before putting the guests away on a Morelia Castro kill, 25-17.

The two teams stayed close to the other in set two, splitting the first 20 points.  A Cecelia Lucas hammer jump started a 10-5 run, the last point courtesy of an Autry service ace.

With the Cougars creeping back to get to within 23-18, another Castro blast gave the Toros set point, and a Kiger ace sealed the set two deal.

The Cougars limited the Toros to a .000 hitting percentage en route to taking a 25-19 set, and looked to push the match to a fifth after taking an 8-6 lead in the fourth.

That's when the Toros elevated their game, using a Kiger kill and Autry service ace to tie the set at 8-8, with a Vanessa Phyakeo putaway giving CSUDH a 14-11 lead and control of the set.

CSUSM's attempted comeback brought the guests to ties at 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22, but that's as close as the Cougars would come as two hitting errors gave the Toros match point, with a Cougar serving error ending the set at 25-23, and the match at 3-1.

Castro added 14 kills and Phyakeo 12, with Kiger dishing a match-high 47 balls in the win.  Libero Cathryn Lopez led all players with 27 digs in a solid effort, while Phyakeo, Lucas and Autry all pitched in with two aces each.

The Toros now get a week off before continuing play next Friday, hosting crosstown rival Cal State L.A.
