Frenetic Comeback Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Cal State L.A.

CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills nearly turned tonight's "Dig 4 A Cure" event into a magical evening after storming back with wins in sets three and four, but visiting Cal State L.A. staved off the Toro rally in the fifth and deciding set en route to a 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 15-7 marathon win between two schools just 18 miles apart.

Alijah Gunsaulus led the Toros with 16 kills and a .349 hitting percentage as CSUDH falls to 6-13, 4-7 CCAA.

It looked to be a short night for the hosts after the Golden Eagles stormed to a two-sets-to-none lead, holding the Toros to just 22 kills entering the third.

After the break, however, CSUDH began to will its way past its crosstown rival, turning a 17-13 deficit into a 19-19 tie on a Gunsaulus blast.

Tied at 20, two CSULA attack errors put CSUDH up by two, and kills by Morelia Castro and Claire Autry gave the hosts life in the 25-22 win.

With both teams going toe-to-toe in the fourth, the teams forged seven ties early before two Castro kills bookending one by Vanessa Phyakeo gave the Toros a 14-11 cushion, one they extended to 21-17 on another CSULA hitting error.

The Golden Eagles, however, would stage their own comeback by knotting the set at 21, 22, 23, and 24, before consecutive Gunsaulus putaways evened the match at two sets each.

That seemed to reawaken the hosts as the Golden Eagles stormed to an 8-1 lead in the fifth on the strong serving of Taylor Kushner en route to a 15-7 finale as CSUDH managed just two kills in the frame.

Autry added 13 kills and Phyakeo 11 in the marathon, but it was too much Iona Lofrano (26K) and JamieAnn Bero (17K) in the CSULA decision.

The Golden Eagles tallied 14 more kills and two more aces, while CSUDH earned the wins at the net with three more blocks, and on the floor with 13 more digs.

CSUDH takes to the road for four matches, starting with a date against Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday, October 20.
