No. 7 Toros Win Intense Battle With Wildcats; Run Unbeaten Streak to 12

CARSON -- Joey Chica broke the ice in the 70th minute but it was Tony Alfaro's penalty kick 1:32 later that was the difference in the No. 7 Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team's 2-1 win over Chico State Friday evening.

The Toros (10-1-2, 5-0-2 CCAA) remain unbeaten in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, but has yet tasted defeat the last 12 matches, matching the best mark since 2009. With Stanislaus State's 2-2 draw with Cal State San Bernardino earlier today, CSUDH (17 points) has leaped over the Warriors (16 points) for first place in the CCAA standings.

The match was considered to be physical from start to finish, with 27 fouls calls even though three of four yellow cards booked to players. It was CSUDH, however, that had the most chances offensively, outshooting Chico State 19-7 overall, 7-3 on goal.

After a couple of close opportunities, it was the Toros who drew first blood in the 70th minute, when a fast-breaking Chica battled a defender and Wildcat keeper Andrew Matthews for the loose ball. Chica managed to get his left foot on the ball to at least send it to the back of the net. A penalty called inside Wildcat territory proved costly as it awarded the Toros a penalty kick, which was successfully taken by Alfaro.

Chico State managed to cut the lead in half nearly a minute later when Dylan Wakefield's lone shot of the night beat Chase Gentry.

Gentry finished the night needing only to make two saves.

The Toros will enjoy a nice weekend off before hitting the road north of the state starting with Cal State Monterey Bay Friday.
