Gators Too Tough in Sweep of Toros

SAN FRANCISCO -- Newcomer Vanessa Phyakeo duplicated her offensive production of 13 kills from last night's 5-set win at Cal State East Bay, but it was not enough tonight as host San Francisco State took a 3-0 sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills to stop the Toros' modest 2-match win streak.

CSUDH hit just .076 in the loss, bringing the Cardinal and Gold to 5-12, 3-6 CCAA.

Emotionally and physically spent from last night's marathon, CSUDH fell behind early in the first set as a 6-1 deficit turned in to a 17-6 hole.

Behind five kills from Phyakeo, CSUDH crept to within 22-19, only to have the team split the final six points to give SFSU the first set win.

The second set was more of the same as the Gators stormed to a 5-1 lead until a pair of Cecelia Lucas kills brought the Toros to within 7-5.

That's when the Gators took control, going on a 5-1 run to push the lead to 12-6 before holding off the Toros in a 25-19 final.

The Toros ran out of steam in the third, scoring just three of the set's first 11 points and getting more than doubled up at 20-9 late in the set.

Four points from Claire Autry's serve gave the Toros a glimmer of hope, but SFSU put the match away behind the final of Jaclyn Clark's 16 kills in the sweep.

Rylee Kiger tallied 29 assists while Cathryn Lopez saved 17 balls.

The Gators also bested the Toros at the net, taking a 10-3 edge in what has been a strong suit for CSUDH thus far.

The Toros return home on Friday, October 9, to host CCAA newcomer Cal State San Marcos for a 7 pm first serve.
