Golden Eagles Get Best of Toros in Crosstown Rivalry Match

LOS ANGELES -- Crosstown rival Cal State L.A. held visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills to a .064 hitting percentage as the Golden Eagles took a 3-1 win over the Toros to sweep the regular season series.

Alijah Gunsaulus hammered home 10 kills in the loss, the lone Toro in double-figure kills.

Completing the final match in a four-match road swing, the Toros took an early 7-4 lead on a CSULA attack error.

That was the extent of CSUDH's momentum to open the frame, however, as the Golden Eagles used a 9-3 run to take a 13-0 lead en route to a 25-19 win.

After set two ended with the same result as the opener, the Toros made a match of it in the third after the two teams tied at 6-6.

A Gunsaulus kill off a Rylee Kiger assist spurred a Toro run that saw the visitors outscore the hosts 5-1, eventually pushing its cushion to 18-11 on a Claire Autry hammer.

CSULA got to within 21-20 on a Toro attack error, but kills by Vanessa Phyakeo and Cecelia Lucas gave CSUDH a 24-21 lead, with a Golden Eagle ball handling error putting the Toros back in the match.

In the fourth, the teams split the first 18 points before CSUDH ran off three straight points to take a 12-9 lead.  CSULA, however, tied the set at 13-13, and then raced to a commanding 23-14 lead before holding off the Toros for the 3-1 win.

CSULA doubled CSUDH's output at the net while out-digging the Toros by 10 in the match, dropping CSUDH to 7-16, 5-10 CCAA.

The Toros will try to snap its three-match skid at home on November 6, hosting nationally ranked Sonoma State for a 7 pm first serve.
