Heartbreak Finds Toros as CSULA Takes 2-1 Golden Goal Decision

CARSON -- Senior Gabrielle Pena launched her shot through a staunch Golden Eagle defense and into the net to tie today's crosstown rivalry battle in the 68th minute, but visiting Cal State L.A. got the final say as its dribbler found paydirt in the 107th minute to give the visitors a golden goal and a 2-1 win over the Cardinal and Gold on a cool Friday evening at the StubHub Center's Field 3.

With its fourth 2-1 loss of the year, the Toros fall to 2-12-1, 1-8-1 CCAA.

Despite being on opposite ends of the league standings, the Toros out-played their crosstown rival in the first 45 minutes of play, taking a 5-3 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corners.

Cal State L.A., however, made the most of its three attempts as Katarina Karabetsos connected for her first goal of the year after knocking in former Toro Katelyn Fregosi's header that was saved by a Toro defender in the 34th minute.

That's where the score remained until the second half when CSUDH's offensive pushes finally found the net.

In the 68th minute, Naomi Linares collected a corner and flicked a header into the box, where Pena sent a blast that went through a bevy of Golden Eagle defenders and past CSULA keeper Adriana Maldonado for the equalizer.

Neither team scored over the rest of regulation nor in the first extra session, with the teams looking to each earn a point after six minutes elapsed in the second overtime.

With just 3:15 left, however, Anahie Duran sent her ball to Victoria Arredondo, whose shot was deflected by Toro keeper Alexia Flippen, but was forceful enough to roll into the uncontested net for the golden goal.

CSUDH ended up with a 16-9 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corners with Johana Rosas' 4 and Vendela Schonberg's 3 shots leading the Toro offense.

The Cardinal and Gold will conclude its home schedule on Sunday at 2 pm, hosting Bethesda University.  Prior to the contest, CSUDH will honor its four 4-year seniors in Megan Guzman, Lindsey Armstrong, Pena and Sami Feinstein.
