Jacks Roar Back in 5-Set Win Over Toros

ARCATA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills junior Vanessa Phyakeo hammered home 17 kills while adding 13 digs, but host Humboldt State reversed a two-sets-to-one deficit with wins in sets four and five to take tonight's CCAA match-up between two teams fighting for one of eight berths in next month's league tournament.

The Toros, now 5-8 in league play, sit in a tie for 9th place with Humboldt State with seven matches left in the regular season, including three against the top two teams in the league in Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino and two others against perennial powers in Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego.

After a first set that saw the hosts take a 25-20 win, the Toros regrouped in the second after falling behind 9-5 to outscore the Jacks 10-1 to take a 15-10 lead behind seven straight serves by Dana Brown.

HSU answered with a run of its own to catch the Toros five times down the stretch, before a Phyakeo kill gave CSUDH set point at 24-22, and a bad set by HSU tied the match at one set apiece.

It was more of the same after intermission as the Toros raced to a 5-1 lead behind Phyakeo's serve that included consecutive aces, only to have HSU creep to within just one at 17-16.

That's when Phyakeo took over at the service line, with two key kills by Morelia Castro helping seal the 25-20 win and a two sets to one lead.

HSU stormed back in the fourth before Breanna Golsch's serve brought the Toros tack to a 10-all tie, but the Jacks went on a 7-1 run to take control of the set.  One last push by the visitors behind Alijah Gunsaulus, Castro and Rylee Kiger brought the Cardinal and Gold to 23-23, but a Jack hammer and Toro error tied the match at two sets each.

It was all HSU in the finale as the Jacks scored the first six points, running away with the 15-4 decision.

Castro added 13 kills, Brown 39 assists, Golsch 18 digs and 3 aces in the loss, the second 5-set defeat in the past three matches.

CSUDH continues its CCAA roadtrip on Saturday, facing league leader Sonoma State for a 7 pm first serve.
