Toros Sweep Season Series From Cougars in Convincing Fashion

SAN MARCOS -- Sophomore middle blocker Morelia Castro hit .400 on the night while posting 10 blocks as Cal State Dominguez Hills swept through Cal State San Marcos to sweep the regular season series, two matches to none.

The Toros improve to 7-13, 5-7 CCAA, while claiming their fourth win in six matches after dominating the net play to the tune of a +10 advantage and holding CSUSM to just a .035 hitting percentage.

Vanessa Phyakeo and Alijah Gunsaulus paced the Toros with 10 kills each, with Dana Brown dishing 35 assists and Cathryn Lopez adding 16 digs, both totals good for match-high efforts.

After a draining 5-set loss to crosstown rival Cal State L.A. last Friday, the Toros gave up the first three points before catching the hosts at 4-4 on a Gunsaulus putaway.

The two teams tied seven more times until the Cougars inched ahead by a 16-13 count.  That's when Gunsaulus and Phyakeo led the comeback as CSUDH knotted the set at 18-18 on a San Marcos error, with two more host errors with the set tied at 23 giving the Toros the first set win.

CSUSM looked to tie the match by taking a 6-2 lead in the second, but the Toros quickly put those hopes to rest behind Castro's strong serve, tying it ata 7-7 on yet another Cougar error.

That run opened the floodgates for the Cardinal and Gold as Phyakeo served 10-straight balls to bring the Toros to 24-15, with Gunsaulus ending the set on one of her 10 kills.

The Toros used that momentum to take an early 7-3 lead in the third behind another stellar serving rotation by Phyakeo, keeping San Marcos at arm's length until the Cougars cut their deficit to 12-11 on a Cheyanne Patin blast, and tied the set at 15 on a Toro attack error.

With the set knotted at 16-16, CSUDH went on a 9-4 run to close the match, with Castro delivering the set's final two serves, resulting in a pair of Cougar errors to end the night on a high note for the Toros.

Phyakeo added 12 digs in the win, with Brown, Briana Boyd and Sarah Greenland all chipping in a service ace.

Castro put down 10 balls at the net, with Cecelia Lucas and Claire Autry chipping in 5 blocks each.

CSUDH continues its CCAA roadtrip this week at Humboldt State, with Friday's first serve in Arcata set for 7 pm.
