Early Second-Half Goals Complete No. 6 Toros Rally in Win at Gators

SAN FRANCISCO – Trailing by one at the break, the sixth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team scored two quick goals in less than three minutes to claim a 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over San Francisco State Sunday afternoon.

The Toros, winners of five straight and unbeaten in their last 14, improve to 12-1-2 overall, 7-0-2 in the CCAA. With 23 conference points and three matches remaining, CSUDH has extended its lead over second-place and idle Cal Poly Pomona by six.

Tony Alfaro evened the score on his fourth penalty kick off the season in the 51st and Joey Chica put the Toros ahead in the 54th.  While it is the sophomore's fifth goal of the year, it was his third in the last four matches.

The Gators (5-6-3, 1-5-3 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute, when Ashley Watson took a free kick from 25 yards out to beat Toro keeper Chase Gentry.

San Francisco State maintained that 1-0 lead until a foul called in its penalty box proved costly as Alfaro improved to 4-for-4 on penalty kicks.

CSUDH jumped ahead three minutes later when Chica's shot from 15 yards out found the upper left corner of the box. Edson Lemus and Pedro Velasquez were credited with assists.

The Toros outshot the Gators, 13-5, but drew more fouls, 28-18. Gentry made one save for CSUDH. On the other side of the pitch, Emmanuel Jimenez allowed the two goals before handing the reigns to Daniel Boyer in the 31st.

Friday's final home match of the regular season will feature the Toros taking on crosstown rivals Cal State L.A. Kickoff is slated for 4:30 pm following a brief "Senior Day" ceremony.
