Missed Free Throws Costly in 55-53 Loss at CS East Bay

HAYWARD -- Down two with just :02 left on the clock, Josh Brown stepped to the line for two free throw attempts after making all three previous tries on the night, but the redshirt freshman missed the front end, and his intentional miss on the second attempt that led to a desperation heave by Shaq Hunter falling out of bounds came up short as Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped a 55-53 heartbreaker at Cal State East Bay tonight.

The Toros fall to 4-9, 0-7 CCAA, after misfiring on 14 of 33 attempts from the charity stripe.

"I am extremely pleased with how hard everyone on our travel roster competed tonight in contributing to our overall team effort tonight," begins interim head coach Steve Becker.  "Josh played big on both sides of the court and Mike Hill also gave us a spark off the bench with his effort and intensity.

"Justin Sadler also again showed signs of developing into a good player in the CCAA, but our inability to make free throws doomed us," he continues.  "But East Bay and head coach Gus Argenal deserve all the credit as they competed and closed when they needed to.

"We just need to build on the level we competed at tonight for tomorrow at Monterey Bay."

Unlike the previous two games in which they were blown out, the Toros came out strong against the Pioneers, taking a 27-26 lead behind Justin Sadler's six points, and five each by Mike Hill and Darnell Martin, all while hitting 7-of-11 from the foul line.

A triple by Brandon Woods to open the second-half scoring gave CSUDH a 4-point edge until four straight points by the hosts knotted the game at 30-all.

Two more ties followed before the Pioneers took an 8-point lead at 51-43 with 6:05 left, until six-straight free throws brought CSUDH back to within two with 2:21 left in regulation.

CSUEB returned the favor by hitting a pair of freebies to lead by four, with layups by Salder and Brown tying the game with 29 seconds left, setting up the frenetic finish.

The Pioneers capitalized on their opportunity as Jacari Whitfield hit a floating lay-up with seven seconds left, giving the Toros one final possession.

Brown looked to make good on that possession with a drive down the lane, only to be fouled by Darrick McIntosh to send him to the line.

After the first attempt rimmed out, Hunter secured the intentional miss that caromed to the far corner, but his attempt over a pair of East Bay defenders fell short, giving the Pioneers the win.

Brown's 12 points tied for game-high honors, with Sadler chipping in 11 in the loss as East Bay also drained four more triples.

CSUDH will look to get a split tomorrow night in Seaside, set for 7:30 pm.
