Toros Hang On in 66-61 Nail-Biter Over Chico State

CHICO -- Cal State Dominguez Hills used a substantial 47-28 rebounding edge, including 17 on the offensive end, as well as a 21-point outburst from Monay Lee and two of her teammates who tallied double-doubles as the Toros held on for a 66-61 win over host Chico State to sweep the regular season series.

The Toros gain sole control of second place in the conference after Cal State East Bay toppled Cal Poly Pomona, with league leader visiting the Torodome on Saturday, February 7.

"We did what we needed to do to get wins, and I'm proud of how our team handled the road trip," said CSDUH head coach Molly Goodenbour, with a sigh of relief.

"We had a really good and balanced effort in the first half, but we let them back in it.  Monay had a solid weekend and Talia was a beast again, and we're going to need both of them as well as the rest of the team next weekend," she concluded, already devising a game plan for the Coyotes and Jacks.

After taking a 20-point win over the Wildcats in the Torodome on December 5, CSUDH took a 41-30 lead at the break, fueled by Tayler Champion's 14 points, 13 by Lee and 11 by Talia Rayford and bolstered by a 24 to 16 rebounding edge.

CSUDH upped its lead to 15 at 47-32 on a Kaaron King jumper with 3:30 elapsed in the second half, pushing the lead to a game-high 16 points at 51-35 on a Rayford layup with 14:50 left in the game.

Chico State, however, used a 15-4 run over the next seven minutes to cut its deficit to 55-50, with a Hannah Womack old-fashioned 3-point play at 1:38 bringing the Wildcats to within 62-59.

The Toros' free throw shooting stopped CSUC's momentum as Garcia and Lee drained the final four attempts in the final 24 seconds to win their fourth-consecutive game and seventh-straight on the road.

CSUDH returns home next weekend to host CS San Bernardino, with first tip set for 5:30 pm.
