Rayford's Double-Double Pushes Toros to Key 62-53 Win at CSUSB

SAN BERNARDINO -- Coming off a tough loss at CCAA league leader Humboldt State two days ago, senior Talia Rayford led the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros to a key 62-53 win over host CS San Bernardino with a monster 24-point, 12-rebound effort.

CSUDH improves to 10-4, 5-1 CCAA, and remains in a two-way tie for second in the league.

"We pulled out a tough win on the road, on a very difficult road trip," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour, breathing a sigh of relief.

"We struggled offensively again but Talia really stepped up and found ways to get to the basket in the second half, and Kielyn Wilson helped us defensively again.

"We aren't playing our best but found a way to win, so I'm proud of that effort."

The final four minutes of Saturday night's game proved crucial for the Toros, who picked up a win after a tough loss at HSU on Thursday.  On three occasions inside the final 10 minutes, CSUSB held a six-point lead with the latest being 48-42 with 6:56 left.

The Toros answered that deficit with a 6-0 run of their own over the next 90 seconds and each team traded the lead once before the hosts took a 52-51 lead after two free throws with 3:56 left.

Monay Lee scored on a three-point play and Rayford scored inside that put CSUDH ahead 56-52. Another Rayford layup padded the lead to six before the Yotes stopped the run on a free throw that cut the deficit to 58-53 with 56 seconds left.

But that would end the Coyotes' scoring as they missed on their final six shots from the field in that critical span.

The Toros (10-4, 5-1 CCAA) outscored the Coyotes 16-7 from the line to offset their 4-of-23 effort on threes.

Rayford scored a game-high 24 points and Lee had 11. Kielyn Wilson was the only other Toro to hit double figures with 10.

The Toros continue CCAA road play next weekend, starting with a Friday night tilt at Cal State East Bay.
