Huge First Half Moves Toros Past Pioneers

HAYWARD -- Senior Talia Rayford continued her stellar play with 20 points and 11 boards, while redshirt junior Anandi Jimenez (pictured) posted a monster effort of 13 points and 11 boards as Cal State Dominguez Hills picked up its second straight road win in a convincing 69-55 victory over host Cal State East Bay.

Winners of nine of their last 10, the Toros improve to 11-4, 6-1 CCAA.

"We came out and got a really good start which was fun to watch, and it was nice to get a win on the road," begins head coach Molly Goodenbour.  "Talia provided great energy, leadership, defense, rebounding, scoring -- you name it, she did it and had an outstanding game.

"Monay Lee played tough and effectively and I thought we all rebounded well."

Cal State East Bay trailed by as many as 23 points during the first half as CSUDH entered the contest as the top rebounding team, solidifying that stat by outrebounding the Pioneers by 20 to maintain control throughout.

"Dominguez Hills is an incredibly athletic team. Coach Goodenbour takes advantage of every mismatch out on the floor," praised East Bay Head Coach Suzy Barcomb.  "She puts the players in position to succeed. They outplayed us in every aspect of the game and we were not able to execute well enough."

CSUDH (11-4, 6-1 CCAA) put up gaudy first half numbers shooting 5-of-9 (.556) from distance, 5-of-6 (.833) at the charity stripe, and outrebounded the Pioneers 27-13. Talia Rayford and Monay Lee were the key offensive contributors combining for 35 points on 14-of-22 shooting from the floor including a 4-of-6 effort from beyond the arc.

"We had no answer for Lee or Kielyn Wilson. They played very well and we didn't remotely keep them off the glass. We can't give a team that many offensive boards and second chance points," Barcomb added.

Entering tonight's contest these two squads led the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in rebounding margin in league play with the Toros (+9.2) tops and the Pioneers (+7.8) not far behind. CSUDH won the battle on the glass and finished the night with 20 offensive rebounds and 24 second chance points. The Toros are the first team to outrebound the Pioneers by 20-plus boards during the Barcomb era.

Stephanie Lopez led  Cal State East Bay (9-4, 4-3 CCAA) with 14 points and four assists. She connected on 10-of-13 free throws while the rest of the squad went just 8-of-16 at the line.

Tori Breshers  finished with four blocked shots on the night and is tied for the league lead with nine through seven league contests.

CSUDH's Rayford completed her double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Anandi Jimenez went 9-of-11 at the foul line and finished with 13 points and 11 boards. Wilson was one of three Toros to collect double digit rebounds pulling in 10 on the evening.

The Toros will look to complete the road sweep tomorrow night at CS Monterey Bay, which dropped a 70-61 decision to visiting Cal State L.A. earlier tonight.
