Toros Keep Gators Winless After 65-56 Decision

SAN FRANCISCO -- After a disappointing loss to UC San Diego as a bookend to last weekend's homestand, Cal State Dominguez Hills got back to its winning ways in a 65-56 win over host San Francisco State.

Tayler Champion (pictured) led all scorers with 16 points while Talia Rayford didn't mess around, winding up one assist shy of her first-career triple double after a spectacular all-around 12-point, 10-rebound, 9-assist effort.

CSUDH improves to 14-5, 9-2 CCAA, and maintains its 2nd-place tie in the CCAA with Cal Poly Pomona after the Broncos walloped league leader Humboldt State by an 85-52 count.

The Toros jumped out to a fast start behind nine Breanne Garcia points, with both her and Champion draining a pair of threes in the process as the guests took a 34-21 lead into the half.

CSUDH's lead reached 18 at 41-23 on another Champion 3-pointer early in the period, until a Gator run cut the Toro advantage to just 54-48 at the 8:20 mark.

The Toros replied, however, pushing their edge to nine points, where it hovered over the next three minutes.

SFSU made one final push in securing its first win of the 2014-15 season in cutting the deficit to just 61-56 with 3:07 left, but four-consecutive free throws by Rayford in the final 14 seconds closed the door on SFSU's hopes in the 65-56 final.

Garcia finished with 12 points as the Toros again dominated on the boards to the tune of a 43-31 edge.

CSUDH will look to earn their second CCAA road sweep of the year tomorrow night, taking on Sonoma State for a 5:30 pm tip.
