Broncos Topple Toros in Four

Box Score

POMONA -- Visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills was held to a .096 hitting percentage while host Cal Poly Pomona tallied a .223 hitting mark as the Broncos took a 3-1 win over the Toros in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.

Jilianne Pineda led the Toros with 9 kills on 28 swings as the Toros dip to 1-6, 0-3 CCAA in the 25-11, 28-26, 25-15, 25-21 setback.  CPP, meanwhile, improves to 4-3, 2-2 CCAA.

The first set was all CPP as the Broncos raced to a 15-4 lead and never looked back in the 14 point win.

Much to their credit, the Toros stormed back in set two, taking a 17-12 lead and withstanding a Bronco push to take the 28-26 decision on a CPP service error as CSUDH connected for 17 kills and a .209 hitting percentage in the frame.

After the extended intermission, the Broncos again asserted their authority, turning a slim 7-4 lead into a 21-10 edge, taking the set on a Lauren Jones putaway.

CSUDH looked to even the match in set four after taking a 6-5 lead on a Pineda blast, and extending it to 13-11 on an Alijah Gunsaulus hammer.

But CPP again took control late as it turned its two-point deficit into a 20-18 lead, holding the Toros to just three points the rest of the set while scoring five points itself to take the set and match.

Gunsaulus added 8 kills while Hannah Warner tallied 5 and a .364 hitting percentage.

CPP, meanwhile, was led by Nicoletta Stork and Alexa Hasen, who put away 12 and 10 balls, respectively.

CSUDH continues its CCAA road trip tomorrow night as it battles UC San Diego after the Tritons dropped a four-setter to Cal State L.A. earlier tonight.
