Toros Take Spirited 7-5 Decision Over No. 2 Otters After CSUMB Powers Up in Game One Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARSON -- Playing with nothing to lose, Cal State Dominguez Hills took a spirited 7-5 nightcap decision over No. 2 Cal State Monterey Bay in the penultimate home twinbill of the 2014 season after the Otters clubbed four home runs in an 8-4 opening game win.

Two-time senior All-American Adriana Sanchez went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI, drawing five walks in which she saw just three strikes in those at-bats to pace the Toro offense as CSUDH moved to 16-30, 10-20 CCAA.

After seeing the Otters go yard four times in the first game, the two teams put up single runs in the second and third innings of the nightcap, with CSUMB adding a single run in the fourth.

CSUDH, however, two-upped the Otters in their fourth-inning at-bat as a Kaci McGinnis rope that hit off the shortstop's glove plated a pair of runs, with Jasmine Ruiz scoring on a wild pitch to end the scoring in the frame.

The Toros added single runs in the next two innings, including Ruiz's second home run of the year, a blast that was needed after the Otters scored two runs in the seventh to make a game of it.

Ruiz led all players with three hits, with Madison Murphy and Brittany Brenner joining McGinnis with a pair of hits in the win.

Alicia Paiz tossed 6.1 innings to pick up the win, with Karen Peterson coming in to retire the final two outs for her first save of the year.

The opener was a power show by the Otters as four long balls trumped one by Sanchez in the 8-4 win.  Sanchez and Ruiz belted two hits each, while CSUMB netted its eight runs on 11 hits.

The two teams conclude the four-game set tomorrow morning at 11 am.  In between games, the Toros will honor their six seniors in Brittany Brenner, Catherine Brown, Elizabeth Jimenez, Karen Peterson, Adriana Sanchez and Veronica Vazquez.

The game will be streamed on the Toro Sports Network, with David Smock calling all the play by play.
