Sonoma State Sweeps Toros in Disparate 2-1 and 13-6 Contests

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARSON -- Senior All-American Adriana Sanchez slugged her seventh home run of the year in her first at-bat, but that was the extent of the Cal State Dominguez Hills offense as visiting Sonoma State scored twice in the fifth to take a 2-1 win in game one of this afternoon's CCAA double-header.

In the nightcap, the visitors rolled to a 13-6 win in a show of offense for both teams.

With its sixth- and seventh-straight loss, CSUDH dips to 14-14, 8-10 CCAA.

Sanchez got the scoring started early, turning on an Amanda Llerna offering and hammering it down the left field line and over the fence for her seventh home run, and 27th in her Toro career, leaving her just one shy of tying the CSUDH all-time career mark for home runs, set by former Toro All-American Emiley McEwen, who played three seasons in Carson.

That looked to be plenty of support for Toro starter Jamie Duran until the fifth inning when SSU put the first two runners of the frame on, with a Megan Konieczka double tying the game at 1-1.  After a pop up and fielder's choice at home plate, Amanda Rossetta drove a single to right field to break the tie.

LLerna then settled down, cruising to the complete-game win.

CSUDH managed just five hits in the loss, with Sanchez tallying two of them.

The nightcap was anything but a pitcher's duel, with Sonoma State tagging Toro starter Karen Peterson for seven runs in the first.

The Toros picked up three of their own as SSU starter Melissa Smith record just one out, as Stephanie Hua walked in a run, wtih the other two coming on a wild pitch and Alexandra Mootry RBI baseknock.

SSU, however, added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth, and not even Jasmine Ruiz's first home run of the year in the fourth and Brittany Brenner's solo blast in the seventh would be enough to complete the comeback.

SSU reliever Katy Bihl pitched 6.2 innings for the win as Ruiz wound up the only Toro with two hits.

The two teams complete their four-game series tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for 11 am on Toro Diamond.
