Power Stroke in Effect as Toros Win Two on Day Two of Desert Stinger

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Junior Stephanie Hua (pictured) belted a 3-run home run in the 4th inning to help push Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 8-1 win over No. 23 Dixie State on day two of the Desert Stinger tournament, one game after Kaci McGinnis belted a first inning grand slam as part of a 5-run frame as the Toros took a 6-5 decision over Northwest Nazarene to kick off the day's competition.

With the wins, CSUDH remains undefeated at the tournament, and has won five games in a row in improving to 5-4 overall.

The opener against NNU seemed to be over early after McGinnis' slam, as Analisa Nicholson followed to give the Toros back-to-back jacks and a 5-1 lead.

NNU chipped away at its deficit with single runs in the 2nd and 3rd, and two in the 4th to tie the game at 5-5, but slugger Adriana Sanchez roped an RBI single in the bottom of the 4th to plate Elizabeth Jimenez for the eventual game-winner.

Nicholson was the lone Toro with multiple hits, while pitcher Karen Peterson went the distance to pick up the win, fanning six batters in the process.

In the late game against the Red Storm, CSUDH again was offensive early with three runs in the 1st, one in the 3rd and three in the 4th, the big blows coming on two DSC errors in the first, and Hua's 3-run blast in the 4th.

After DSC got on the board in the 6th, CSUDh answered in the 7th courtesy of a Carly Mitchell RBI baseknock to account for the final scoring as starter Jamie Duran cruised to the win after scattering seven hits and no earned runs in the process.

Hua and McGinnis each roped a pair of hits with Hua and Murphy Madison driving home three runs each.

CSUDH will conclude the Desert Classic tomorrow morning, with an 11:30 am battle against host Montana State-Billings.
