Offense Erupts as Toros Pick Up First Win of 2014 in Final Game of BWI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TURLOCK -- Junior Kaci McGinnis enjoyed a perfect 5-for-5 performance with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored as Cal State Dominguez Hills picked up its first win of 2014 in a 6-inning 15-6 romp over Holy Names at the Best of the West Invite, hosted by CS Stanislaus.

The Toros conclude their first tournament of the year at 1-4 after dropping a 6-5 decision to Cal State San Marcos in their first game of the day in which Stephanie Hua clubbed a pair of 2-run home runs.

For her efforts in that game, as well as in the tournament, Hua was the lone Toro named to the BWI All-Tournament team.

Against Holy Names, the Toros put up a pair of 6s in the 2nd and 3rd frames to take a 12-0 lead, tallying 11 of their 19 hits in those innings.

Carly Mitchell and Jasmine Ruiz provided the big blows in the 2nd with respective 2RBI and 3RBI baseknocks, while 2RBI base hits by Catherine Brown and McGinnis in the 3rd accounted for four of the frame's runs.

Holy Names made it a game by scoring three runs in both their 3rd and 4th innings to make the score 13-6, but CSUDH scored twice in the 6th on 3 hits and a Hawk error to account for the final scoring in the mercy-run rule contest.

Karen Peterson picked up her first win by tossing 4.0 innings, scattering 8 hits and allowing 3 earned runs.

Junior Alicia Paiz worked the final two innings, allowing just one hit in her Toro debut.

The opener against the Cougars saw a back-and-forth affair with five lead changes, with a Stephanie Hua 2-run shot in the 4th, and Brown RBI single in the 5th and another Hua blast putting the final two runs on the board for CSUDH an inning later.

CSUSM, however, would answer with two runs in the 7th to give the designated visiting team a 6-5 lead, and hold on to the win.

Jamie Duran suffered the loss after tossing a complete game, allowing 4 earned runs as CSUDH committed two errors in the contest.

The Toros will make their way to Las Vegas for the Desert Stinger Tournament next weekend, hosted by Montana State Billings, starting with a Friday morning match-up against Western Washington at 11:30 am.
