Toros Run Wild Over Chico State in 62-42 Decision to Open CCAA Play

CARSON -- Junior point guard Breanne Garcia celebrated her 21st birthday in style, tying for team-high totals as Cal State Dominguez Hills took down Chico State, 62-42, in the CCAA opener for both teams.

Garcia nailed half her attempts from the floor (4-8) and all four free throws in the win as CSUDH won its second straight in improving to 4-3, 1-0 CCAA.

"It's great to get off to a good start in CCAA play, and I thought we persevered through some rough patches on offense and stayed positive and focused," begins head coach Molly Goodenbour on beating her former team.

The birthday girl paced the Toros in the first 20 minutes of play, scoring 6 points to stake CSUDH to a slim 23-22 lead entering the break as both teams shot under 30% from the floor.

CSUDH, however, amped up its offense after the break, shooting 41.67% to stretch the advantage to 33-26 on a Tayler Champion bucket with 16:34 left in the game.

A Monay Lee bucket 90 seconds later gave the Toros their first double-figure lead at 38-28, with a pair of Julia Poecksteiner free throws bring the lead to 13.

Consecutive triples by Champion and Poecksteiner brought CSUDH to 58-41 as the Toros cruised down the stretch, with a pair of free throws by the birthday girl fittingly closing out the 20-point win.

Garcia and Champion finished with 12 points each, with Monay Lee chipping in 10 in the win.  Senior Talia Rayford added eight points and was the lone player to pull down 10 boards.

"Talia continues to get better as an on-floor leader and her consistent ability to track down rebounds really gives us a lift," Goodenbour continues.

"Lots of people are playing and helping us right now, and we just need to keep improving."

The Toros will get another chance tomorrow night as CS Stanislaus pays the Torodome a visit, with first tip set for 5:30 pm.  The game will be streamed on College TV Ticket, with Marc Serber calling the play-by-play.
