Aggressiveness Keys 74-61 Win at Simon Fraser

BURNABY, British Columbia -- Visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills shot just 34.8% from the floor, but its aggressiveness on the offensive end paid huge dividends to the tune of a 20 to 8 advantage at the free throw line as the Toros earned a tough 74-61 win over one of the GNAC's top teams in Simon Fraser.

Monay Lee (pictured) and Breanne Garcia led the Toros with 16 points apiece.

"They played really hard and with a lot of heart, and I was really pleased with today's team effort," begins head coach Molly Goodenbour.

"Simon Fraser is a tough team, and with Chambers and Wilson being tough match-ups, we will need to make some adjustments tomorrow."

The first half saw the hosts shoot 42.4% from the field, with Wilson staking the Clan to an early lead with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor.  SFU was poised to take a lead heading into the break, but CSUDH's aggressive nature provided eight free points at the line, compared to just one for SFU with Talia Rayford earning three from the charity stripe as the teams entered the half tied at 32-32.

That's when the Toros asserted themselves by hammering SFU on the boards, tallying a +10 in that category after trailing by two before the half.

Tayler Champion played up to her namesake after the break, leading the Toros with 12 points that included 3-for-6 from downtown.  She also tallied 6 boards and two steals in the frame as CSUDH forged a 50-40 lead after a Kielyn Wilson layup with 12:50 left in the game.

A Clan triple cut its deficit to 56-49 four minutes later, only to have Anandi Jimenez come through in the paint with a bucket, pushing CSUDH's lead to 61-49 with just under seven minutes remaining.

SFU managed a run that cut the score to 63-56 three minutes later, but the Toros were clutch at the free throw line down the stretch, nailing their final six to put the Clan down in the 13-point win.

"I am very proud of our team," Goodenbour continues.  "Tayler's defense in the second half sparked us and we picked up our intensity, and then did a nice job of attacking and getting to the line.

"Nandi also gave us good minutes, defending and making good plays on offense."

The Toros also capitalized on Clan mistakes, enjoying 19 points on 19 SFU turnovers with Rayford tallying three steals and Garcia and Champion two each, while CSUDH's bench stormed back in out-scoring SFU's bench players 22-0 after the break.

The two teams complete the back end of the double-header tomorrow at 1:00 pm, with the game being streamed live by clicking here.
