Wildcats Spoil Senior Night in 3-0 Sweep Over Toros

CARSON -- Despite the emotion associated with the pomp and circumstance that surrounded honoring Cal State Dominguez Hills' lone senior in Azieanna Smith on "Senior Day," visiting Chico State hit a robust .418 on the night while limiting the Toros to .143 en route to a 3-0 sweep on a warm evening in the Torodome.

The Toros fall to 3-21, 2-18 CCAA, while the Wildcats even their record at 12-12, 10-10 CCAA.

A tight match that saw three ties early turned in favor of the guests after the Wildcats turned a 10-8 lead into a 21-12 runaway en route to a 25-15 first set win, with CSUC's Lindsay Quigley serving a stretch of seven-straight points that bookended a pair of Toro timeouts.

The Toros fared no better in the second as CSUC clawed to a 13-4 lead, with the Wildcats running away to a 22-9 advantage before a 25-12 decision to take a two-sets-to-none lead.

After the break, CSUDH erased an early 10-5 deficit behind the serve of Bridgt Heins, coming to within 13-12 on a Dana Brown service ace before knotting the game at 17-17 on a Rylee Kiger hammer.

That's when Emily Duran's serve took over, rattling off eight-straight points to give CSUC match point at 24-18, and not even a rare kill from defensive specialist/libero Korryne Kelley could not delay the inevitable as Chico State finished off the Toros on an Olivia Mediano putaway, her 15th and final, good for match-high honors.

Chico's Kristyn Casalino enjoyed a monster game fo 13 kills without an error, good for a .867 hitting percentage.

Alijah Gunsaulus led the Toros with 11 kills, with Kelley digging 10 balls in the loss.

CSUDH wraps up its 2014 season on the road next weekend, starting with a Thursday night date in Arcata taking on Humboldt State.
