Jacks Regroup to Drop Toros in Four

ARCATA -- Host Humboldt State turned the tables on visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills after the Toros hit .378 in the first set, winning the final three stanzas to take a 3-1 win over CSUDH despite Alijah Gunsaulus leading all hitters with 15 kills in the match.

CSUDH drops to 3-22, 2-18 CCAA, while the Jacks improve to 17-8, 14-7 CCAA, sweeping the regular season series.

The Toros jumped out fast, making just one error in the opening set while putting away 15 balls on 37 swings.  Strong serving by Korryne Kelley set the stage early, with a pair of Dana Brown aces in the middle of the set pushing the Toro lead to 16-11.

Brown served three more points in her rotation to bring CSUDH to 18-12, before Claire Autry and Rylee Kiger put the finishing touches on the set with strong serving as CSUDH used a 6-1 run to put the Jacks away.

HSU followed the Toros' lead in the second, pushing an early 8-2 advantage into a 12-4 runaway, again reaching an 8-point cushion before the eventual 25-18 win to even the match.

It was more of the same in the third as the Jacks turned an 8-3 edge into an 18-10 advantage, withstanding strong serving by Kelley to earn a 25-17 victory.

The Toros seemed focused on tying the match in the fourth after Kelley's serve brought CSUDH to an early 7-3 lead, with the Autry-Kiger serving duo keeping HSU at arm's length at 14-10.

The Jacks, however, used a 6-2 scoring run to knot the game at 16-all, before using a 9-4 surge finished the night for the Toros in the four-game match.

Brown, Azieanna Smith and Morelia Castro added seven kills each in the loss, with Castro's four block assists and two solos giving CSUDH a 10 to 6 edge at the net.

HSU benefited from four Jacks tallying double-figure kills in the balanced with, ending with a .258 hitting percentage compared to .214 for the Cardinal and Gold.

The Toros wrap up their 2014 campaign on Saturday with a date at perennial power CS San Bernardino, set for a 7 pm first serve.
