Gunsaulus Erupts for Career-High 23 Kills as Toros Take 3-1 Win Over CS Stanislaus

CARSON -- Junior outside hitter Alijah Gunsaulus hammered home a career- and match-high 23 kills as Cal State Dominguez Hills hit a season-best .266 on the night in taking a 3-1 win over Cal State Stanislaus to sweep the regular season series from the Warriors.

The 18-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-21 win snaps a nine-match losing streak as CSUDH improves to 3-20, 2-17 CCAA.

Cal State Stanislaus took a hotly-contested first set that saw 10 ties and 6 lead changes, before the Toros evened the match in set two by hitting .429, rattling off 16 kills with just one error behind the strong serving of Claire Autry, Azieanna Smith and Leilani Martinez.

After intermission, CSUDH continued its momentum by taking a 9-3 lead on a Natalie Lopez hammer.  The Warriors used a 7-3 run to trim their deficit, but three kills by Gunsaulus over the next five points gave the Toros breathing room at 16-12 as the Warriors got no closer than three points the rest of the frame in the 25-20 win.

CSUDH looked to put the match away in the fourth set, and started strong behind Dana Brown's serve.  The Toro lead stretched to as much as six points six times down the stretch, until CSUS scored four-straight points to get to within 23-21.

The final Gunsaulus kill, however, gave CSUDH match point at 24-21, and Gunsaulus slammed the door on the Warriors herself with a service ace, giving the Toros a regular season series sweep.

Morelia Castro added 11 kills and three block assists, with Brown leading all setters with 45 assists.  Martinez's 14 digs paced three Toros with at least 10 saves, with a +6 in the attack error department paying huge dividends for the Cardinal and Gold.

The Toros will conclude their 2014 home schedule tomorrow night against Chico State after honoring lone senior Azieanna Smith in a pre-match ceremony.
