Cal State L.A. Rolls to Sweep in Midweek Match-Up

CARSON -- Visiting Cal State L.A. used a .209 to .034 hitting advantage en route to a 3-0 sweep over host Cal State Dominguez Hills in a midweek California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match-up, with Dana Brown leading all Toro hitters with eight kills.

The Toros fall to 2-20, 1-17 CCAA in the 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 decision, while CSULA improves to 14-7, 12-6 CCAA after the regular season sweep.

The two teams traded the first 14 points of the match, until the right side of Cal State L.A.'s block swarmed CSUDH's left side attack.  A block assist by Natalie Lopez and Morelia Castro stopped the Golden Eagle surge, with a Dana Brown hammer bringing CSUDH to 10-9 early.

A Castro solo stuff tied the game at 11-11, until a pair of kills, a stuff from CSULA and a Toro attack error spurred a run that saw the visitors take a 21-15 lead, and force a time out from the Cardinal and Gold.

The hiatus didn't slow CSULA's momentum, unfortunately, as the Golden Eagles took set one by a 25-15 final.

CSUDH took control of set two early, jumping to a 9-4 lead on a kill by Hailey Smith.  CSULA, however, roared back with six straight points to take a 10-9 lead, prompting Antoni Perry to enter the game.

Perry got right to work, ending CSULA's run with a hammer from the right side, before exiting the game to a row of waiting high fives.

CSULA capitalized by scoring the next seven points for a 17-10 lead.

Down 18-13, a Dana Brown ace slowed CSULA's run, but a kill and block assist brought the Golden Eagles to a 20-14 advantage.

CSUDH wouldn't succumb, rallying to a 23-21 after a Brown attack hit nothing but line, prompting a Golden Eagle time out.

A Mia Alcaraz dink, however, brought CSULA to set point, where they claimed the second set on an errant pass.

After the break, a Hailey Smith ace got CSUDH off on the right foot, pushing the hosts to an early 14-8 lead, the last coming on a Gunsaulus rocket that hit the baseline.

CSUDH kept the heat on, using a Rylee Kiger blast and Golden Eagle attack error to take an 18-10 edge, signaling a CSULA time out.

That proved timely for the visitors after a 4-2 run to bring the game to 20-14, prompting a time out by the hosts.

Five-straight points by CSULA, however, behooved another hiatus by the Cardinal and Gold, its final of the set.

Again, the break did little to quell CSULA's momentum as a pair of Toro errors gave the Golden Eagles a 21-20 lead, with a Toro overpass leading to a Kelsey Molnar hammer.

A Brown putaway tied the game at 22-22, until a cross-court rifle by Kymberly Silveyra pushed CSULA to within two points of the match.

Another Toro overpass brought the score to 24-22, with a Golden Eagle block assist closing the door on tonight's match.

Gunsaulus added 6 kills and Claire Autry and Castro five apiece, with Leilani Martinez saving a team-high 13 digs in the loss.

The Toros will conclude their regular season homestand this weekend, starting with a match against CS Stanislaus on Friday at 7 pm.
