Furious Comeback Fuels Toros' 60-56 Win Over Point Loma

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Dominguez Hills roared back from a 12-point second half deficit to take a thrilling 60-56 win over Point Loma at the CSULA-hosted Thanksgiving Classic this afternoon to halt a two-game skid.  Junior Breanne Garcia led the Toros with 14 points in the win as CSUDH evens its record at 3-3 entering next weekend's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener against Chico State.

"The team made really nice adjustrments and did a much better job communicating defensively at the end fo the game, and I was proud of the effort in the comeback," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour.

The Toros still seemed in recovery mode early after yesterday's loss to Cal Baptist, with Point Loma holding the Toros to a dreadful 27.3% shooting percentage in the first half en orute to a 31-27 edge, despite shooting just 28.6% themselves.

The Sea Lions increased their lead to 38-27 at the 17:07 mark, and to a game-high 14 at 43-29 two minutes later.

Up 50-38 with 10:13 left, Point Loma went cold as the Toros began to heat up with Talia Rayford sinking a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 10, with a Julia Poecksteiner triple and Garcia fast break layup and pair of free throws bringing the Toros to within 50-47 with 5:49 left in the game.

Garcia again made her presence felt with an old-fashioned 3-point play to knot the game at 50-50, with CSUDH taking its first lead of the second half on a Kielyn Wilson layup with 120 seconds to go.

With the game knotted at 56-56, Rayford gathered her own miss for a put-back and a 58-56 lead, before sinking a pair of free throws to put the game away.

"Talia came up with a huge rebound and two clutch free throws, and I was very proud of her individual effort and competitiveness," gushes Goodenbour.

PLNU's Jessica Escorza led all scorers with 22 points, with Rayford the only player to notch a double-double with her 10 points and boards.

The Toros' aggressiveness accounted for four more points from the foul line, a huge difference in today's game to go along with CSUDH's massive 46 to 24 rebounding advantage.

CSUDH will kick off its CCAA schedule on Friday as Chico State visits the Torodome for a 5:30 pm first tip on Friday.  The game will be streamed live on CollegeTVTicket.com for a small fee.
