Lancers Hand Toros 81-72 Loss to Open Thanksgiving Classic

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Dominguez Hills senior Talia Rayford poured in 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, but Cal Baptist's Courtney Nelson topped that effort with a 30-point outburst to lead the Lancers to an 81-72 win over the Toros to open the Cal State L.A.-hosted Thanksgiving Classic.

The Toros fall to 2-3 on the year, with a match-up against Point Loma looming tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm.

"Cal Baptist moved the ball well and shot extremely well, and we were a step slow defensively," begins CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour.

"We need to be more willing and focused on doing the little things and need more consistency from our entire team.

"We have another opportunity tomorrow to improve," she concludes.

CSUDH opened up a 10-2 lead early after four points by Monay Lee and a triple by Julia Poecksteiner, only to see Cal Baptist outscore the Toros 37-18 the rest of the half to take a 39-28 advantage at the break, led by Nelson's 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor.

The Toros cut their deficit to just three at 43-40 on a Kielyn Wilson fastbreak layup at the 15:24 mark, until a Nelson layup, triple by Kamille Diaz and jumper by Darsha Burnside pushed CBU's lead to 10 just two minutes later.

An old-fashioned 3-point play by Wilson at 6:12 brought the Toros to within 61-55, but it was too much Nelson in the CBU win as the Lancers improved to 5-1 on the year..

No other Toro finished in double-figure scoring, as Kaaron King tallied 9 points and 9 boards in the loss.  Lee and Anandi Jimenez added 8 points each as CSUDH converted just 36.8% of its field goal attempts, while CBU connected for 45.2%.

The Lancers also pierced the net from long range, making 10 threes compared to just one for the Toros.  Additionally, the Toros didn't help themselves at the line, missing 11 of their 26 attempts while CBU connected for 15 of 23 tries.

Nelson finished shooting 9-of-16 and 9-of-11 from the line en route to her 30 points to lead a quartet of CBU players with at least 10 points.
