Academy of Art Downs Toros in Battle of Defending League Champs

SAN FRANCISCO -- Defending PacWest Champion Academy of Art handed defending California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament Champion Cal State Dominguez Hills an 81-76 setback in what could be a preview of the NCAA Tournament in March.

Talia Rayford tied for game-high honors with 18 points while pulling down a team-best 8 boards in the loss that drops CSUDH to 2-2 on the year.

The Knights got the best of the Toros in the first half, out-scoring the guests 7-0 in points of turnovers and 9-5 on second chance points to take a 43-39 lead in the first 20 minutes of play, with CSUDH taking its first lead of the game at the 4:34 mark after a Rayford layup but seeing an AAU triple with 6 seconds left giving the hosts a four-point lead.

The Knights stretched their lead to double figures at 17:22, until consecutive buckets by Tayler Champion brought the Toros to within four at 51-47 with 12:49 left in the game.

AAU would not fold, however, again taking a 10-point lead five minutes later, and holding a 7-point edge with 2:00 left in regulation.

A Rayford jumper and Monay Lee bucket cut CSUDH's deficit to just three, but strong free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the game for AAU in the 5-point win.

Champion tied for game-high honors with 18 points while Breanne Garcia chipped in 15 and Lee 14, but CSUDH faltered at the free throw line, misfiring on 11 of 30 attempts in the loss.

CSUDH also committed five more turnovers that led to a 19-7 edge for AAU in points off turnovers.

The Toros will look to regroup after Thanksgiving at the CSULA-hosted Thanksgiving Classic, first taking on Cal Baptist on Friday for a 2 pm tip.
