Champion's Game-High 22 Points Pushes Toros to 68-63 Win in Home Opener

CARSON -- Senior Tayler Champion drained 7 of her 10 shots from the floor in the home opener for Cal State Dominguez Hills en route to a game-high 22 points to lead the Toros to a 68-63 win over visiting St. Martin's in non-conference action.

The Toros move to 2-1 with the win, while the Saints drop to 1-2.

"I was pleased with our defensive effort and it was a good win at home, but Academy of Art will be a tough challenge on Monday," said CSUDH head coach Molly Goodenbour, already focusing on the next challenge at hand.

On an evening in which their CCAA Tournament Championship banner was unveiled (finally), the Toros played up to their billing after a shaky start in which the Saints held a lead until the 13:49 mark.

A triple by Champion gave CSUDH its first lead at 11-9 just 16 seconds later, an edge the Toros would keep the rest of the way.

The second half saw the Toro edge swell to as much as 12 on a Kielyn Wilson 3-pointer, a score that matched her defensive intensity throughout the game that saw her lead the game with 4 steals while chipping in 17 points.

"Kie was a spark for us and will really help us this season if she can bring tonight's engergy and focus each game," Goodenbour continues.

But it was Champion who played up to her name, finishing the game with a team-high 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor.

"Tayler got in a decent offensive rhythm, but I actually thought she did so by concentrating on her defense and communication and then letting the offense come to her," Goodenbour explained.

The CSUDH lead grew to as much as 16 on a pair of Champion free throws to give the hosts a 56-40 lead
with 8:22 left in regulation, keeping the Saints at arm's length the rest of the way in a result that wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

The Toros enjoyed a 9-4 edge in steals which resulted in 26 points off turnovers as Breanne Garcia added 11 points and 2 steals in the win.

CSUDH will travel to San Francisco next week to face Academy of Art, with first tip set for 7:30 pm.
