Toros Lock Down on Coyotes in 2-0 Win in First Round of CCAA Tournament

CARSON -- Dominant.  If there was one word to describe today's performance by Cal State Dominguez Hills against visiting Cal State San Bernardino in a CCAA Tournament first round match-up, dominant is it after the Toros earned a dominating 2-0 win over the Coyotes to move onto the CCAA semifinal next Friday against top-seeded and No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona in Turlock, site of the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Israel Murguia notched would proved to be the game-winner with a 35-yard blast from the right side of the pitch in the 50th minute as part of a 36-6 shot advantage for the Cardinal and Gold, while a staunch defense kept the Coyotes from attempting a single shot on goal in the shutout win that moved them to 9-8-2 overall.

The Toros established their attacking tempo from the start, tallying an 18-2 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes, making Coyote keeper Roberto Gonzalez make 4 saves in the process.

That aggression finally paid off at the start of the second half after Bryan Haley launched an outlet to a streaking Murguia.

Collecting the pass and gathering himself, Murguia launched a 35 foot knuckleball at Gonzalez 45 degrees to the keeper's left, which Gonzalez got his mitts on but couldn't control as it trickled past the goal line for the score.

CSUDH matched its first half shot output with 18 in the second, but managed 7 shots on goal compared to 4 in the first frame.

Of those seven shots on goal, the fifth of the half was a beauty by Joey Chica, who took a feed from Jaime Rios at midfield and dribbled past the back-pedaling Coyote defense before sending his blast past a diving Gonzalez to double CSUDH's edge.

The Toros rattled off six more shots to no avail, but the damage had been done as CSUDH advances to the next round against the CCAA regular season champion Broncos on Friday at 4:30 pm.

CPP took a 2-0 decision in the first meeting between the two teams in Pomona, with the Broncos connecting on a pair of first-half goals.  CPP enjoyed a 17-10 shot advantage in the game, including an 11-4 shots on goal difference in favor of the Green and Gold.
