No. 8 Cal Poly Pomona Ends Toros Season in 2-1 CCAA Semifinal Decision

TURLOCK -- Cal State Dominguez Hills saw its 2014 season come to an end in the first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) semifinal as top-seeded and No. 8 Cal Poly Pomona scored early and played a man up for the final 53 minutes of the game in taking a 2-1 win.

CSUDH ends its season at 9-9-2, with senior Santos Romero notching the lone Toro goal in the 87th minute.

"Cal Poly Pomona finished their chances tonight, and we didn't," begins Toro head coach Joe Flanagan, obviously dejected.  "Pomona is a solid team, but I was so proud the way our boys played tonight and throughout the season."

The CCAA regular season champion Broncos were the epitome of efficiency in the early going, tallying just three shots in the first frame compared to six for the No. 4 seeded Toros, but connecting at 12:46 after Christian Gonzalez Diaz took a lob ball from Daniel Garcia and beat Chase Gentry for an early score.

That's where the score remained heading into the second half when the Toro climb became steeper after team captain and 1st-team All-CCAA selection Tony Alfaro was issued his second yellow at 49:02, sending him off the field and saddling the Toros with just 10 players the rest of the game.

Cal Poly Pomona took advantage nearly 30 minutes late as two passes created a 1v1 opportunity for Daniel Asor against Gentry, with the striker getting the best of the freshman keeper for a 2-0 lead.

CSUDH cut its deficit in half in the 87th minute after a foul in the Bronco box gave Romero a PK opportunity, which he converted at 86:47.

But it was too little, too late as time wound down, sending the Broncos to the CCAA Title game on Sunday.

"Our boys did everything we asked them to do tonight and this year, from minute 1 to minute 90, and I can't complain about their effort at all," Flanagan concludes.

The Toros bid farewell to just two seniors this season, and with the rest of their roster having a pair of do-or-die playoff games under its belt, look to make a deeper run into the CCAA and possibly NCAA postseason.
