Huge Second Half Pushes Cougars Past Toros, 72-65, to Open 2014-15 Season

AZUSA -- Host Azusa Pacific erased a sizeable 11-point deficit at the half by outscoring visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills by a monstrous 18 points after the break in taking a 72-65 win over the Toros to open the 2014-15 season.

Monay Lee led the Toros with 15 points but Cougar Kelly Hardeman put up 29 to lead all scorers at the Felix Event Center.

The defending CCAA Champs played up to their billing in the first half behind Tayler Champion, who poured in 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the floor, including two triples to give the Toros a 34-23 lead at the break.

APU, however, locked down on its defense in the second half while heating up its offense, led by 23 points by Hardeman, who drained 8-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-5 from downtown in the come-from-behind win.

After the Toros pushed their lead to 35-23 on a pair of Lee free throws to open the second half, APU rode Hardeman's hot hand and brought its deficit to just 43-39 with 14:02 left in regulation.

The Cougars clawed all the way back to tie the game at 43 with 11:39 left after a layup by Hardeman, and took its first lead since early in the first half on its next possession.

APU pushed its edge to 57-50 with just over six minutes left, only to see six-consecutive free throws by Talia Rayford bring CSUDH to within one, until a Cydnie Jones free throw ended the run.

A Kielyn Wilson layup at 4:15 again brought the Toros back to within a single point, but two Jones freebies and a triple by Hardeman gave APU breathing room, with a Katie Powell fast break layup that brought the score to 71-61 with 1:42 left in the game put away any hopes of a Toro comeback.

Champion finished with her 14 points, going 0-for-7 in the second half, with four misses coming from downtown.

Rayford chipped in 12 points and 7 boards, while Lee tied for game-high rebounding honors with 9, with Anandi Jimenez collecting 8 in the loss.

CSUDH will look to regroup tomorrow afternoon as it faces Point Loma in a 5:00 pm match-up.
